Knowing if you need repair service on your furnace or AC can be daunting. Below are some tips to try that will save you money on a repair bill.

  1. Inspect the filter.

Have you changed or cleaned your filter recently? A dirty filter is one of the most common reasons an air conditioner has problems and does not function properly. Dust and dirt restrict proper airflow through a furnace causing the heat exchanger to overheat and making it turn off.

  2. Check the thermostat.

Make sure your thermostat is set to cool.

  3. Change the batteries.

Old batteries can cause a thermostat to stop functioning properly and revert to default programming.

  4. Verify temperature setting.

Make sure the temperature is set lower than the current temperature in the room.

  5. Test the thermostat.

Set the temperature 10 degrees cooler then the temperature in the room to see if the air conditioning turns on.

  6. Check the circuit breaker.

Make sure the circuit breaker isn’t tripped. A power outage or surge has not caused a breaker to trip.

  7. Inspect air ducts.

Make sure vents are fully open and nothing is blocking proper air flow in the room.

Ban on Refrigerant

What this means for homeowners.

How to prepare for the ban.

And what the ban means for you.

On January 1, 2020, the refrigerant chemical hydrochlorofluorocarbon 22, also known as HCFC-22 or R-22 or Freon will no longer be produced or imported to the United States.

With this new ban, the supply of Freon or R-22 refrigerant will be very expensive.

Air conditioners that were manufactured in 2010 or newer should be eco-friendly and not use R-22.

If you have an AC unit older than 2010 and it is not leaking refrigerant, we will still be able to make repairs. If the freon level is low or leaking, we will still be able to refill it to keep your air conditioner functioning properly after the ban, but it will be very expensive.

Before the ban, we suggest scheduling your AC tune up regularly.

After the ban, we still suggest having your air conditioner cleaned and checked regularly, but we also advise you to consider the cost of repairs may make replacing your air conditioner with a new one more cost effective.
